France president Jacques Chirac raises his arms in celebration of a French goal during the World Cup championship game on Sunday, July 12. Chirac was on hand to see France beat defending champion Brazil 3-0 and become the first host team to win the World Cup in 20 years. The blurriness of this picture shows how quickly France's Zinedine Zidane got into postion to score the opening goal of the World Cup championship game with this header on Sunday, July 12, in Paris. France never trailed after the goal, going on to beat Brazil 3-0. France's Zinedine Zidane (10) gets free for a header that resulted in the first goal of the World Cup championship game on Sunday, July 12, in Paris. Although Zidane scored again later in the game, that goal was all the French needed to win as they beat the defending champs 3-0 to claim their first World Cup. France's Zinedine Zidane heads home his second goal of the World Cup championship game on Sunday, July 12, in Paris. Zidane's two goals, both headers, sparked France to a 3-0 victory over defending champion Brazil. 1994
Paolo Maldini and Romario battle for possession. Romario was given little space in this final which turned out to be an anti-climax compared to many of the earlier games in this World Cup. Franco Baresi clears away the ball before Romario. The Italian captain played the game of his life in the final. He got injured in a first round match and missed every game leading up to the final, but in the final itself Baresi proved to be the classy defender everyone knew he was. Aerial battle in the final. Massaro and Mauro Silva. Bebeto in the final. Roberto Donadoni and Romario during the final.

Roberto Baggio followed closely by Cafu. The quality of defensive play was extremely high in the final, and Baggio wasn't the only attacker who had problems. Drama in the penalty shoot-out. Taffarel saves the attempt from Massaro. Italy are in trouble. The moment of truth. Roberto Baggio fires his penalty over the bar in the shoot-out and Brazil are the new world champions. Romario kissing the trophy Brazil had been waiting to get their hands on. They had won the Jules Rimet Cup permanently in 1970, but had never won this new trophy which was launched for the 1974 World Cup. Brazil's 1994 World Cup winners. Top row from left: Taffarel, Jorginho, Aldair, Mauro Silva, Marcio Santos and Branco. Bottom row from left: Mazinho, Romario, Dunga, Bebeto and Zinho.

1990
Diego Maradona with the ball chased by Jürgen Klinsmann. Andreas Brehme was the best left-back in the World Cup as well as the matchwinning hero in the final when converting the penalty five minutes from the end. Jürgen Klinsmann struggling to deal with the Argentina defenders. It wasn't Maradona's tournament, and all opponents made sure of eliminating him from the games Argentina played. Maradona was by far the most tackled player and only in short flashes did he show his brilliance, most notably against Brazil in the second round. The Mexican referee Codesal Mendez and Diego Maradona arguing. There were lots of conversations between Maradona and referees during Italia 90.

The World Cup final winning goal: Andreas Brehme's (3) perfectly placed penalty wide of Goycoechea was the only goal of the game. The final is over. German flags are waving in the background. In the Argentina camp there is only despair. Maradona in the center of the picture. West German fans celebrate their third World Cup title. Franz Beckenbauer became the first man to captain and manage a World Cup winning team. The entire West German World Cup winning squad of 1990 with the trophy in the foreground.

1986
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is tackled by Manuel Amoros and Michel Platini in the semifinal which was a replay of the classic encounter four years earlier. The 1986 match ended with the same winner, but had nothing of the same excitement and drama. 2-0 was the final score. Physical battle in the France v West Germany semifinal. Yannick Stopyra (left) and Dietmar Jakobs. Argentina took the lead in the final against West Germany following an awful error by goalkeeper Toni Schumacher who missed the cross completely. José Luis Brown pushed away Maradona to head into the open net. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (green shirt on the ground) reduces Argentina's lead seventeen minutes from time following a corner. It was Rummenigge's final goal for the national team. He retired after the final. West Germany have equalized to 2-2 with nine minutes to go having been 2-0 behind. Goalkeeper Toni Schumacher celebrates the goal. He was voted best goalkeeper of the tournament, but failed to live up to his high standards in the final itself. Argentina scored the winning goal just three minutes later.

The goal that won the World Cup for Argentina six minutes from time. Burruchaga raced clear, beat Schumacher with a simple finish and Briegel (right) was too late to tackle. Maradona celebrates with the fans and the World Cup trophy. The Azteca Stadium still packed with 115.000 spectators even though the game was over a long time ago. It's all over! Argentina are the new world champions. People are storming the field to celebrate with the players. Argentinian supporters storming the field to celebrate their World Cup triumph.
